Trip Introduction

Most of the treks in the Langtang region are considered to be short yet rewarding treks in Nepal. Langtang is a region in the Himalayas of Nepal to the north of the Kathmandu Valley, bordering the Tibet autonomous region of China. The Langtang Region trek is relatively easy yet it offers a spectacular view of the Himalayan range. This Langtang Valley trek, in particular, is attainable within a short time period and could be a perfect way to spend a vacation with your family or friends. Furthermore, this could also be a splendid opportunity to experience and understand the unique culture of the people residing in this region. The residents of the region follow a unique Tibetan-influenced culture and tradition with local deities. Strong devotion and a feeling of reverence for the mountains, land, and life around them serve as the cornerstone of the lifestyle.

A 7-8 hours of exciting drive from Kathmandu sets us apart from Syabrubesi, from where the actual journey on foot begins. Small villages, well-terraced farmland, wildflower forests, lush temperate to alpine vegetation, and the striking Langtang Lirung Himal are some of the perks of this trek. Since we spend almost all of our trekking days inside the Langtang National Park, this could be an opportunity to witness the unique Himalayan faunal and avifaunal species including Rhododendron (more than 7 species), Seasbuckthorn, Musk deer, Gray Langur (long-tailed Indian monkeys), Red panda (on rare occasions), Dhanphe, Munal, etc. As for those interested in local delicacies, in addition to Nepali-Tibetan cuisine, yak milk products, particularly cheese and yogurt can be enjoyed along the trail. The yak cheese factory in Kyanjin commercially produces cheese with local yak milk. Also, seabuckthorn juice can be enjoyed.

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,350m/4,428ft)
Meals included: Dinner

Our airport representative welcomes you at Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu upon your arrival. He/she escorts you to the respective hotel in a private vehicle. A meeting is scheduled later where you will meet your guide and get updates with regards to the trip. We also discuss any equipment or gear to be procured and make sure we are prepared for the trek. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 02: Drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi (1,550m/5,100ft)
Total duration: 7-8 hours
Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner

You are picked up from the hotel by your guide and to the bus stop to board the early morning bus to Syabrubesi. The road trip starts along the hilly Prithvi Highway which takes you through valleys, beautiful forested areas, and riverside settlements. Eventually, we take the mountainous road to Dhunche. The road onward winds down all the way to Syabrubesi. Some sections of the journey may be bumpy, yet you are in for an exciting drive. After almost 8 hours, we reach Syabrubesi where we overnight at a lodge.

Day 03:Trek from Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel (2,380m/7,830ft)
Total duration: 6-7 hours
Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner

Shortly after breakfast, we begin our trek by crossing a suspension bridge over the Bhote Koshi River. We make our way through small villages until we reach Pairo. The uphill trail meanders through the beautiful oak and rhododendron forest, eventually dropping to the Langtang Khola (River) to arrive at Bamboo on the other side. We have covered just over half of the day's trek. The ascent continues along a forested trail with a long suspension bridge in between. A steep ascent appears next on a landslide section followed by another steep section along a forested trail before arriving at Rimche. From here, it is a relatively steady path all the way to Lama Hotel.

Day 04: Trek to Mundu (3543m/11,621ft) via Langtang village
Total duration: 6-7 hours
Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner

The destination for today is set for Mundu via Langtang Village. Our journey today begins with a brief ascent as we walk past small riverside villages and numerous beautiful waterfalls along the forest. We start to witness a magnificent mountain landscape above the glacial valley high up ahead. The trail winds up through the dense forest and clears abruptly revealing a beautiful landscape including the Langtang range. After a short pleasant walk on the other side of a suspension bridge, we reach Ghoda Tabela. The trail continues to ascend passing by a few herders’ settlements and a monastery. The damage left by the massive landslide following the 2015 earthquake is apparent before arriving at the substantial settlements at Langtang Village. The terrain now gets distinctly rugged and the mountains appear closer including Tsergo Ri. We continue our short ascent further up the valley to arrive at the quaint village of Mundu. The unobscured mountain view appears more striking from up here. Overnight at Mundu.

Day 05: Mundu to Kyanjin (Kyangjin) Gompa (3,870m/12,697ft)
Total duration: 4-5 hours
Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner

We trek towards Kyangjin Valley, named after the Kyanjin Gompa, the major monastery in the region today. It is a relatively short trek, therefore we may take our time. We start our trek with a pleasant walk passing a line of beautiful chortens - a pleasant sight to witness, 'mani' walls (rock with fascinating religious inscriptions), and small monuments decorated with prayer wheels. Prayer wheels powered by a flowing stream and a monastery by the riverside are worth an exploration. The trail takes a gradual hike shortly before we reach the village of Kyangjin Gompa on the other side of a small ridge. After lunch, we have the afternoon to explore the village and the monastery. The Kyanjin Gompa (Monastery) said to be about 700 years is worth exploring with its fascinating murals, scrolls, collection of historic prayer books, and the statues of deities. The valley offers a magnificent view of the Langtang Lirung range to the north and the Kanja (Ganja) Himal to the south. A beautiful river basin with pastures can also be seen below the village towards the southeastern end of the valley. If you're up for it, the afternoon may also be spent adventuring on a hike to the Kyanjin Ri or the Langtang glacier. Overnight at Kyanjin Valley.

Day 06: Summit Tserko Ri (5000m/16,404ft)
Total duration: 9-10 hours (including return)
Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner

An important day of the trek. We begin our hike to Tsergo Ri early in the morning as the weather is expected to be more stable and less windy then. We begin the long 'kora' (a cultural term meaning circumambulation) hike by taking a gradual high path that climbs east across the pasture and then crosses a glacial stream to commence our relentless climb to Tserko Ri (Tsergo Ri). Be prepared for a windy climb and carrying a crampon may not hurt as the trail, especially higher up may be covered in ice. The ascent itself can take on average three to four hours as the trail spirals against the ridges and pervades glacial rocks. A packed lunch is required to be carried. The summit is festooned with prayer flags and offers a front-row seat to a 360-degree vista of splendid mountains and glacial landscape. Langtang Lirung (7227m) appears distinctly and the Kyanjin Valley down below towards the northwest, Dorje Lakpa (6966m), Yala peak (5,520 m), Naya Khang (5,844 m), Langshisha Ri (6,427 meters), to the east, and Ganchenpo (6,387m), Ganja Chuli (5863m), to the south, and the fascinating lowland below Tsergo Ri, all make for a view worth cherishing for a lifetime. After we enjoy packed lunch at the summit and soak in the view, we slowly start our return trip to Kyanjin. The return hike takes about three to four hours and is mostly downhill as we descend almost 1,300m. Rest and overnight at Kyanjin.

Day 07: Trek Kyangjin Gompa to Lama Hotel: 6-7 hours
Total duration: 6-7 hours
Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner

After breakfast, we retrace the trail all the way back to Lama Hotel. The return trek is also exciting as we enjoy the dropping trail that meanders through beautiful forests, numerous Tamang settlements, Langtang River, and the beautiful view of the mountains. Overnight at Lama Hotel.

Day 08: Trek Lama Hotel to Syabrubesi: 6-7 hours
Total duration: 6-7 hours
Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner

Today we descend towards Syabrubesi. Resuming after breakfast, we walk towards Rimche and then to Bamboo. Shortly after descending from Bamboo, there is a natural spring across the river opposite the trekking trail. Rejuvenated we follow the trail all the way to Syabrubesi. Last night of the trek is spent at Syabrubesi.

Day 09: Syabrubesi to Kathmandu
Total duration: 6-7 hours
Meals included: Breakfast/ Dinner

We return to Kathmandu from Syabrubesi on a public vehicle. Upon reaching Kathmandu, you are accompanied to the hotel. You can freshen up and may go shopping or enjoy downtime in the evening at Thamel. A farewell dinner later in the evening would be a great time to share the fun experiences over the trek with the team. Any genuine feedback for us would be highly appreciated and warmly received.

Day 10: Final departure
Meals included: Breakfast

This is the last day of your trip with us. You may extend your trip to visit other interesting places in and out of Kathmandu which is completely optional. You would be dropped off at the airport according to your flight schedule. Goodbye and hope to see you again!
