Nepal officially the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal is a landlocked sovereign state sandwiched between India to the south, west & east and China to the north. Chitwan National Park is one of the most popular national parks in Nepal. The park is situated in the subtropical lowlands of southern Nepal, lying between the Shivalik and the Mahabharat range covering the area of 932 Kms. The reserve was designated a national park in 1973 and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. About 70% of the national park area is covered by the sal forest providing a home to various birds and animals. Chitwan National Park is the natural habitat of endangered animals like Bengal tigers, one-horned rhinoceros, gharial, crocodile, gaur (the world's largest wild cattle), four species of deer, leopards, fishing cats, leopard cats, python etc. There are over 60 species of mammals and 546 species of birds in the park. Chitwan National Park offers various activities that can be undertaken during one’s visit. The most popular activity is the elephant back safari. Tracking the Royal Bengal Tiger and one-horned rhino on top of an elephant is exciting. You will be taken deep into the jungle to witness the habitat of wild animals in their natural environment. Another thrilling activity is canoeing in the Rapti River where you will see the crocodiles and gharials alongside the river banks basking sun. Jungle walk and Jeep safari allow you to understand the wildlife up close.
